Music
The children at St Mary’s are entitled to a high-quality music education which engages and inspires them to develop a love of music and their talent as musicians. It should also increase their self-confidence, creativity, and sense of achievement. As they progress, pupils should develop critical engagement with music, allowing them to compose and listen with discrimination to the best of the musical canon.
It is our intent that music will enrich pupils’ lives and education as many of the skills are transferable across the curriculum. We intend to develop language and reasoning skills through music in addition to improving the skill of memorisation.
At St. Mary’s we will use the excellent resources of Kapow Primary music to help develop pupils’ musical abilities. Through the Kapow scheme, the children are introduced to instrumental lessons. We currently focus on glockenspiels as we feel they are easily accessed by all pupils and offer a fantastic gateway into the understanding of wider music theory.
The aims of our Music curriculum are to develop pupils who:
- Can sing and use their voices individually and in a group
- Create and compose music on their own and with others
- Use technology appropriately when composing
- Have opportunities to learn a musical instrument
- Understand and explore how music is created, produced and communicated
- Listen to, review and evaluate the work of great composers and musicians from a range of historical periods, genres, styles and traditions
- Enjoy and have an appreciation of a range of different musical styles e.g.
- Classical, Jazz, Hip Hop, Pop, Rock etc.
- Use and understand musical language and include musical features in their own work
- Make judgements about the quality of music
- Have opportunities to play a wide variety of instruments
- Have different opportunities to take part in performances

Intent, Implementation and Impact
At St Mary's our intent for music is that music will enrich pupils’ lives and education as many of the skills are transferable across the curriculum. We intend to develop language and reasoning skills through music in addition to improving the skill of memorisation. We believe the children are entitled to a high-quality music education which engages and inspires them to develop a love of music and their talent as musicians. The children will learn to listen and evaluate recorded and live music, perform through signing and playing tuned and untuned instruments, compose and improvise, understand music history and read and understand musical notations. The pupils will have the opportunity to develop their talent as musicians, increase their self-confidence, creativity and sense of achievement.
